Lately, Western Digital uses both Trex and Windex as an interface. The test results will be written to files as well as available through VSC status. All test related information gathered throughout the test will be logged to files.

The TOUCHDOWN (TD) calibration is used to find the maximum power that can be applied to the heater element for each head on a drive. This is accomplished by continuing to apply power to lower the heads until they make contact with the media or until the maximum allowable power has been applied. The head to media contact happens only during the calibration process for test purposes. The head is not supposed to touch the media during the normal read-write operations. As the heads make contact with the media, the stress will be registered in the servo flex bias component which will be measured and saved to a log file for analysis. As a result of this test, the maximum power corresponding to the reader/writer for each head/zone combination will be saved to file 46. The TOUCHDOWN calibration is followed by RDWDGap calibration.

The file 0x46 is the optimized channel parameter, which is stored on the zone 0 area. On the other hand, on the Mini-ARCO process, the file 0x47 is the optimized channel parameter, which is stored in the flash area inside of SoC. These optimized parameters in file 0x46 will be used in read and write operation of zone 1 through zone 20. Here is the optimization process.
